What We Do – Back in the Saddle

Back in the Saddle has been designed specifically to provide a way to support long-term changes to your riding confidence.

If you’ve been away on a workshop or course to develop a new skill, you might notice that putting it into practice when you get back to the office can sometimes be a bit tricky. Things get in the way, you “sort of remember but sort of forget” what you learned and it’s easier to go back to doing things the old way.

So, our approach is a little bit different.

We ask everybody to join us on a one-day workshop to begin with.

This helps us to make sure that you have as many tools, resources and friends as possible to support your journey.

At this point, you have three choices:

You might decide to simply join our free half hour conference each month (where we ask you to share ideas about what you’re doing and the impact it’s having).
You might choose to have a follow up coaching session or vet consult (or several).
You might love our one-day workshop so much that you decide to join us at a half-day workshop later in the programme.

What to Expect

Our workshops will be a mix of talking, sharing and learning (we promise there won’t be any role plays or ice-breakers so you can completely relax during the day!!)…note this is an unmounted workshop; there is no riding, and no groundwork. You can choose to bring your horse for the Veterinarian discussions.

The One-Day Workshop

Coaching Content:

How to use the GRID Coaching framework © to help you become more confident in the saddle.
What learning preferences are, and how they might be able to help you to fast track your goals.
How the latest research from Christchurch about resilience can help you to become stronger when things don’t go to plan.
Understanding your Resilience Attributes and how they can help you to become a better rider.
How you can become more self-aware of your Emotional Honesty, Self-Care, Connections and Learning (the Foundations for Resilience) and use this knowledge to more effectively overcome setbacks. Our first workshop particularly explores Emotional Honesty.
The different role that emotions play in helping us Back in the Saddle.
How a Strength focus can help you to achieve your riding goals more effectively.
How to recognise whether you’re in your comfort zone, your learning zone or your panic zone – and what to do when you’ve worked this out.

Veterinary Content (you can choose to bring your horse for this for a “live” check, though it is not compulsory):

How to correctly check your saddle and bridle fit to make sure your horse is as comfortable as possible.
General horse physicality check to give you confidence in your horses overall wellbeing before you ride.

We will also talk about the importance of rider physicality and try out some concise (also known as “easy-to-fit-into-a-busy-day”!) exercise plans that have been designed especially for our BITS programme.

We recommend that when you’ve done our One-Day workshop you consider regular riding lessons in the saddle with somebody who is familiar with our programme. This will provide a way for you to practice the things that you have learned, and should also mean that you are working with an instructor who will be sympathetic to your riding goals (without pushing you at a pace that dents your confidence).

You should also consider our free monthly group conferences, where we ask three or four riders to share what they are doing and how it is helping them to get Back in the Saddle.

If you get stuck on something, or have a specific question you can choose a personal one-to-one Skype coaching session or Vet Consult to help you.

Half-Day Workshop

We recommend that you attend our Half-Day Workshop about five-months after enjoying our One-Day workshop. This is because you should have had time to really try out the things that you learn, exploring what works for you and modifying your approach so it helps you to succeed.

The latest information about how feed affects our riding success
Guidance for preventing or addressing vices
How to recognise and treat soundness issues which may occur in your horse

We will also make sure there are some special treats at our Half-Day workshop, to celebrate your amazing achievements on our Back in the Saddle programme!
